How We Picked The Best Pillow

To find the best pillows, we put dozens to the test and took a look at their construction, performance, manufacturer’s policy, and more. Our testers then rated their experiences with each pillow, taking into account their individual needs and preferences, including pain concerns and overheating at night. Here’s what ultimately decided which pillows made the cut:

Alignment and support – “The right pillow is key to keeping your spine aligned and your neck comfortable while you sleep,” says Dr. Raj Dasgupta. This is why our testers tried each pillow for multiple nights in multiple sleep positions, judging which sleeper types would feel most supported on it. Whether or not a pillow feels supportive varies greatly based on a sleeper’s personal preference and encompasses which firmness, feel, and loft works best for their needs.
Materials and construction – We also looked at what was inside the pillow, not just for quality’s sake, but also to determine which materials were pulling their weight. If a pillow is adjustable, our testers outlined how they felt about the adjustment process, whether that be through rearranging fill or adding especially shaped inserts.
Value – Finally, our testers determined whether or not they felt the pillow’s price reflected their experience with it. Saatva is a company known for its high-end, well-made innerspring beds, and its sleep accessories check the same boxes. The brand’s latex pillow provides a soft but supportive feel, including a surprising plushness that isn’t common with latex. My fellow tester Cait Giddings awarded this bed a slew of 5-star scores, including for materials, comfort, and care.

Cait said that she prefers a firmer pillow with some bounce when it comes to latex, but she still found Saatva’s Latex Pillow comfortable, if a bit “fluffy.” She was pleased to find that there wasn’t any gapping in the center of the pillow when she lay down square on it, and it continued to provide good neck support throughout the night. The pillow comes in two lofts, low and high, and Cait tried out the high loft.

The high loft and pressure-relieving nature of the latex and microfiber fill should serve side sleepers best, allowing them support and softness. Cait didn’t think the loft was too high for some back sleepers, and she found that the fill did flatten, which could accommodate some stomach sleepers who don’t want their neck stretching out of alignment. Hot sleepers should also appreciate that, while Cait didn’t think the pillow was “cooling,” per se, she didn’t think it trapped any heat.

When it comes to caring for your pillow, both the cover and outer fill layers are machine washable (not the latex core). Saatva even recommends washing your pillow at least twice a year, and replacing it after three.
